It feels a little weird to come of age so far from home. Hey, if anyone's listening- do birthdays make you feel awkward here, or is it just another year for you?

I'm not sure whether or not it's something to celebrate, but... still, it can be exciting, right?

[Contrary to the usual tradition of most people, Suki is in the Avatar kitchen today, trying to... make herself a cake. Or rather, a cake she can share with the family at dinner. She wants to know how to cook for her man, after all, and now that she's had a couple of cooking sessions with more experienced bakers, she thought it would be fun to try.

...Someone ~~KATARA HALP~~ should probably supervise, though, before she does something irreversibly unpleasant.]

[The panic passes quickly.] You didn't have to do that! We could have gotten a cake from Regal.

[Approach, approach, approaching-] Unless this is a recipe from home?

[Suki glances over at her, lifting a brow, then gestures to an open book on the other side of her.] No, the recipe is there. I switched some ingredients out, though, to give it a homey touch. [You can totally do that, right.]

Really? [Coming right by to peer at the recipe now.] Which ingredients?

Nothing too serious. I like it healthy, so I switched chocolate chips for raisins, and the frosting is cream cheese instead of icing sugar. [...Which is the sort of substitutes you should make in a carrot cake, not a vanilla-fudge, but it shouldn't be too horrible, right...?]

Do you like vanilla and raisins?

I've never had it, actually. [NEVER FEAR AN EXPERIMENT IN THE KITCHEN, MWA HA HA.]

[Well, you know what? Katara has no problem with this.]

Then it should be fun to try! But... you've doubled the proportions on some of these ingredients. [Look at all that flour, sob.] Maybe we should make two cakes instead?

...Have I? [Oops.] Maybe I got the measurements wrong... um... would two cakes be too much?

[Shrug.] I don't think so. If we don't eat it all today, I'm sure that the boys will finish it off tomorrow.

[Besides, the flour's already out and your cake might require backup.] I'm not much of a baker, but I'm sure we can figure it out.

The boys do have pretty big appetites. I hope they like it, in that case. [Suki goes back to mixing, peering at the recipe.] Well... I guess since it's already doubled I'd better keep it up.

[Katara moves over to wash her hands before lending them to the task.]

We can always experiment with the batter once we're done mixing it! Maybe do something with cinnamon and nuts for the other cake?

I like the sound of that. Cinnamon makes just about anything better.

Good! I think so too. [And Katara starts getting separate bowls so they can make their cakes.] Have you been having a good birthday so far?

It's great! Pretty uneventful, but I like it that way, anyway. It's nice to relax on a special day.

Sixteen is a big deal. Did Kyoshi Island have any special coming-of-age ceremony or anything? It's kind of weird to know that we'll have to go through it twice.

Not really a ceremony, but the entire village always celebrated birthdays together when we could. The Kyoshi Warriors had an especially good party. I blame my sweet tooth on growing up in a place like that.

Wow, that sounds really nice, Suki. I didn't know the village on Kyoshi Island was so close.

[Mixing ingredients...] Our village would always do a big coming of age ceremony for the girls - sixteen wasn't as big of a deal for the boys, since they had the ice running ceremony. We would have a big feast, and if the girl wasn't engaged, there would be games for the guys to show off. But before the feast the mom and all the women close to the girl will bring her into a private tent and make the most complex and beautiful braids that they can. [And tease her horribly about 'becoming a woman.']

Actually, I was wondering... [mix, mix] ...if we're still here, when it's my turn in July.. if you'd be willing to help me with that.

[Suki listens closely with a nod, then at the last part, she brightens up.] Oh, that's right! You've been here long enough for that to be so close... of course I'll help, Katara. I'll do whatever I can, at least. [Complex braids? Maybe she should try looking that up somewhere...]

Thanks. I'll probably ask a few other people to help too. I figure that while we're here, we should be here, you know?

No, you're right. And we have to hold on to what we remember from home, too- it's a part of who we are.

So then would you like us to have a big party for you? Or are you just going to do something with Sokka later?

I think Sokka has something planned? I'm not really sure, but he snuck off earlier, so I have a feeling something's up.
