Well... now that the draft is over, I think it's a good time to do this. Because of all the fighting we have do while we're here, either by choice or by force, it's a good idea to have some understanding of combat in case of an emergency. From what I heard about this last battle, even the people who took refuge weren't able to stay out of the fight. We can't really afford to take chances like that anymore, and I'd like to do something about that- so I have a proposal for the girls of Luceti.

First of all, I'm Suki. I know I look young, but where I'm from, I lead a group of girls known as the Kyoshi Warriors. We're well-trained in combat, and the focus of our style is a mix of defense, stealth, and using our opponent's strength against them. Girls are often smaller and not as strong as men, and it's very important to never view that as a weakness.

None of my warriors are here right now, but I want to start the group here anyway. There's no age limit, no experience needed, you just have to be willing to listen and learn. If you'd like to join, or ask me questions, please, let me know, okay? And if you don't want to get involved in my group, Buffy runs a fighting school as well, and I'm sure there's plenty of great teachers willing to help there, too.

I just don't want to see anyone else get hurt if it can be avoided, so... I hope you'll all think about it.

Demons... vampires? I've never heard of anything like that.

[Now are they better or worse than Fire Nation troops? Because they suck.]

They're...creatures. Usually mostly interested in ending the world and-slash-or all of humanity.

[kyoshi]

[Okay that sounds... freaky. And yeah, worse than Firebenders. At least they just want to rule the world.]

Sounds like you had a lot going on back home.

Eh. That's part and parcel of the whole Slayer gig.

[ perhaps that was too dark. hmm. ] How, uhm, goes...things?

[kyoshi]

At home, you mean? [With Yue, she assumes.] Things are... okay. I think, anyway.

[Kind of awkward, still. She dislikes having to hide it, but she can't really say that publicly.]

I know you and me aren't close but -- if you ever need someone to talk to? I hear barmaids have very good ears.

[Ahaha. Well, she's certainly good for that sort of thing, going by Suki's experience. Even if she'd feel a little selfish to bother someone with such problems, at least she knows what's wrong. And she offered...]

You're not encouraging a minor to drink, are you?

[herotypical]

...Hey, I don't even encourage not-minors to drink. That stuff? Is gross.

[ worst. barmaid. ever. ]

[That's surprisingly comforting.]

[ and later that night? buffy is indeed behind the bar counter. ]

[Shiny! Because along comes Suki, spotting her and heading right over, ready to be served. She's changed and ditched the make-up, though.]

Hey. How's it going?

[herotypical]

[ buffy is deftly pouring a glass of wine for another patron; however, she quickly finishes up and whisks the glass away to its proper recipient. ]

Can't complain. Which is impressive, because usually I can. Have a seat.

I think everyone deserves a break now and then, right? [Suki helps herself to a stool, leaning her arms on the counter.]

Right. That's something I can definitely agree with.

Want anything? Juice? Or...I don't know -- anything?

[kyoshi]

Sure, juice is fine. Whatever you have.

[She drums her fingers on the table, mulling over her situation- why she's here, how well she knows Buffy, whether or not she should play dumb or just dive right into taking her up on her offer. She's not used to dealing with these sort of problems, really...]

[herotypical]

[ buffy assembles one of her favourites -- one part orange juice, one part grapefruit. and she adds a little umbrella in, too. ]

Here you go. And -- [ she notes suki's mulling ] -- take your time. Or don't even say anything at all. It's cool.

No, no, it's- I mean, I... [She trails off, reddening a little, and takes a sip of her drink to conceal it. Delay, delay...] ...It's good. Thanks...

Hey, it's what I'm here for.

[kyoshi]

[Suki just nods, taking another sip. Mulls it over a little more.

Haa, this is harder than she thought it would be.]

I don't... really know what to say to her.

[herotypical]

[ it is by no means the same sort of situation, but buffy thinks on what it's like to live with jilly -- a woman jack obviously has a complicated friendship with. the kinds of complications that make her feel very...awkward about the whole thing. but there was something that helped... ]

You're all living in the same house, right? Maybe -- maybe you should try striking up a convo that has nothing to do with Sokka. If you're gonna have to get along with her, you should probably find...something else to have in common. Other than him.

I... guess so. But we're so different, I can't even think of what to say.

[She's so... girly and beautiful and elegant and gentle. Like some kind of untouchable white princess. And Suki is... not that. Very not that.]

Start with something simple. Friendly. Like...hey, do you like mint chocolate chip ice-cream? Never had it, huh? Wanna try? And then you can pop in a DVD starring George Clooney and all the awkwardness...probably intensifies because you don't have DVDs in your world, do you. Huh. Okay.

New plan. Why don't you ask her to join your ass-kicking girl squad? Maybe just for training? Maybe even to just observe? It's never a bad thing to have some self-defense skills, in this place.
